Additional Formative Obligations (OFAs) are a formative debt assigned to students enrolled in the first year of a three-year degree course who have not passed or taken the initial preparation test (TOLC test). These debts must necessarily be cleared within the first year of the course. The identification of any OFAs to be paid by each new entrant to the University is a legal obligation.

In order to support individual preparation, the Department organises OFA courses in Mathematics, divided into an intensive course to be held before the start of classes and a second one that will take place during the lecture period. These courses are necessary for those who have been awarded OFAs after the TOLC Test. The Introductory Courses are also recommended for students who intend, without OFAs, to make up for any weaknesses revealed by the test.

The fulfilment of the OFAs is a prerequisite for taking the exams of the first year whose SSD (Scientific Disciplinary Sector) of reference is Mathematics (MAT/xx):

Bachelor's Degree Programme in Management Engineering:

  • Fondamenti di Analisi Matematica (SSD: MAT/05)
  • Geometria e Algebra Lineare (SSD: MAT/03)
  • Matematica Applicata (SSD: MAT/07)

Bachelor's Degree Programme in Mechatronics Engineering:

  • Analisi Matematica A (SSD: MAT/05)
  • Analisi Matematica B (SSD: MAT/05)
  • Geometria e Algebra Lineare (SSD: MAT/03)

Professionally Oriented Bachelor's Degree Programme in Technologies for Smart Industry:

  • Matematica per l’Ingegneria (SSD: MAT/05)

The examinations listed above may not be taken without having previously fulfilled the OFAs they are responsible for.

For students of Technologies for Smart Industry, in addition to the TOLC-LP, any OFAs may also be met through an interview to be arranged directly with Prof. Luisa Malaguti (luisa.malaguti@unimore.it).

For students of Management Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering, it is possible to complete their OFA, if any, not only with the TOLC-I, but also with the OFA retrieval tests.

Registration for OFA retrieval examinations can be carried out at www.esse3.unimore.it under "Appelli d'Esame", once the dates have been entered by the teacher in charge. You must be matriculated in order to register.

Registration via Esse3 is required (through your university booklet)

Further dates, which will be announced in due course, are scheduled in December 2023, January, February, April and June 2024.

The retrieval tests will focus exclusively on general mathematics questions and, to be precise, on the following topics:

1. SETS FUNCTIONS AND NUMBERS Intuitive notion of sets and main operations between sets. Quantifiers. Definition of function. The sets of natural, integer, rational and real numbers and their main properties. Principle of induction.
2. ALGEBRA Polynomials. Principle of identity of polynomials. Root of a polynomial. Remarkable products. Division between polynomials. Algebraic equations and inequalities. Systems of algebraic equations and inequalities.
3. POTENCIES, ROOTS AND LOGARITMS and their main properties.
4. TRIGONOMETRIC FUNCTIONS Arcs and angles. Sine, cosine and tangent. Inverse trigonometric functions. Fundamental trigonometric identities. Solving right-angled triangles. Addition formulae of sine and cosine. Simple trigonometric equations and inequalities.
5. FUNCTIONS AND GRAPHS Domain, image, graph. Power function (with integer exponent), root, absolute value; sign function; sine, cosine and tangent functions; exponential and logarithm.
6. FLAT ANALYTIC GEOMETRY Equations of straight lines, parabolas, circumferences, ellipses and hyperbolas and their main properties.

For Management Engineering and Mechatronics Engineering students, each test will last 60 minutes and will consist of 11 multiple-choice questions of which only one answer is correct. The score is calculated by awarding 3 points to each correct answer, 0 points to each incorrect answer and -1 point to each incorrect answer. The use of a calculator is not permitted. The retrieval test is deemed to have been passed with a minimum score of 18.

A student who, on 30 September of the year following the year of enrolment, is found not to have completed the OFAs, is enrolled as a repeat entrant in the first year, maintaining the same propaedeuticity constraints as indicated above with regard to the mathematics examinations listed above.
For repeat entrants, verification of the fulfilment of OFAs will be carried out again on 30 September of the following year, with possible re-enrolment in the first year. Enrolment in the second year will only be possible after the OFAs have been met.

Further information on OFA retrieval and numerous training tests can be found on the MOODLE platform, in the "Altre attività didattiche" section, "Preparazione Test di Recupero" field, which can be accessed after registration.
