The PhD is a postgraduate academic degree corresponding to the third cycle of higher education. It represents the highest degree of university education. For access, it is necessary to have obtained a master's degree or an equivalent qualification. Admission is through a selective procedure. The PhD degree is obtained by ‘defending’ a doctoral thesis at the end of three years of training and research activities. The PhD title corresponds to that of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (PhD) in English-speaking countries.
